Even before former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced her presidential campaign, the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) was holding her and her associates accountable to the public for possible violations of federal campaign and disclosure laws.
On Apr. 2, FACT filed a Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint against Secretary Clinton for conducting campaign activities before officially announcing her candidacy:
A conservative watchdog group is asking the Federal Election Commission to investigate whether Hillary Clinton broke the law by conducting campaign activities before declaring her candidacy, according to a complaint filed on Thursday.
On Apr. 3, FACT requested that Attorney General Eric Holder investigate whether longtime Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal violated federal law by failing to register with the Justice Department as a lobbyist for a foreign interest:
A conservative watchdog group is calling on the Justice Department to investigate long-time Clinton adviser Sidney Blumenthal for his alleged activities on behalf of a politician in the former Soviet republic of Georgia.
The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) says that Blumenthal appears to have violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), which requires those lobbying U.S. officials on behalf of a foreign interest to register with the Justice Department.
Now that Secretary Clinton is an official candidate, FACT will continue to monitor the expected transfer of assets from Ready for Hillary, an outside group created to promote Clinton’s candidacy, and Clinton’s campaign. According to news reports, Clinton’s campaign is planning on buying a massive list of supporters and donors from Ready for Hillary:
Clinton’s new beginning will mark the end of Ready for Hillary, which launched two years ago to lay the groundwork for a Clinton campaign, organized her sprawling network of supporters and promoted the former secretary of state on campuses, at small gatherings and Democratic rallies. It will leave behind a data-rich list of volunteers and financial supporters to be tapped for her campaign. … The lists of supporters are expected to be transferred to or rented by Clinton’s campaign, providing an up-to-date roadmap of volunteers, donors and advocates who will be called upon in the months ahead.
Such a transaction must be done at fair market value, and therefore FACT will pay particular attention to the sale of these lists and will take further action if Secretary Clinton’s campaign does not comply with federal law.
